Quality

  • Sylvan Clayworks does not warranty Sylvan Products because they are naturally fragile. If you encounter issues with your Sylvan products, please email hello@sylvanclayworks.com with details and we will help resolve the issue.

  • No! We do not use lead or any other harmful materials.

  • Yes, the handmade process results in natural variation for each individual product. Every piece is hand-built, glazed and carefully inspected by Sarah, the owner and artist.

  • Although all of my products are handmade and (due to the nature of ceramics) will never be perfect, I do my best to get it very close to bright white . I take pride in imperfections that make handmade items so beautiful - one of those imperfections being slight color variations of white.

Small blue dots appear from time to time on our products. We call these “ceramic beauty marks”. While some larger blue dots may be occasionally deemed a “second”, overall we pass this as an approved quality. These blue dots are due to chemical reactions in the kiln - dust oxidizing in the glaze firing process and/or blue pigment that makes our glaze the bright white that it is.

  • “Seconds” are marked down items that have varying flaws such as: Glaze imperfection, various degrees of warping, kiln debris, small cracks, large pinholes, and testers. Click HERE to learn more about the “Seconds” Categories.

Please note that handmade products are not always “perfect.” These imperfections do not affect the function of the item and are not reasons eligible for refund or exchange: glaze irregularity, “glaze waves”, tiny pin holes, bubbles, fingerprints, small blue dots or brown specks from the clay or imperfections on the bottom side of the piece, etc.

Care

  • If you find yourself with stains from acidic foods or paints, Bar Keepers Friend is highly recommended. Many Sylvan products have exposed clay, which can show oil stains when you start using it for the first time. With normal, continued use, the patina should evolve evenly, and, as it deepens, the surface smooths out. Most important of all, please know that oil staining does not affect the functionality or safety of the products.

  • Bar Keepers Friend, available in most major hardware stores, is great to remove the wear and tear from silverware. The superficial residue actually sits on top of the glaze rather than cuts into it. Ceramic is stronger than the soft metal of silverware, not the other way around.

  • Absolutely. For dishwashing, Sylvan Clayworks recommends a gentle, environmentally-friendly detergent to maximize extending the life of your dishes and finish of the glaze.

  • Sylvan products are microwave safe. It is oven safe up to 400°F, BUT with some stipulations. Always be careful to avoid temperature shocking ceramics from extreme hot to cold and vice versa. A good rule of thumb is to heat things slowly, evenly, and carefully. This means heating the ceramic product up with the oven, never put it on broil or directly onto a hot surface and use the oven with caution. Sylvan Clayworks is not responsible for any breakage.

  • No. Never use an open flame or hot surface with Sylvan Products. This will temperature shock the ceramic product.
